Gentian contains bitter ingredients, flavonoids, iridoids, xanthones, phytosterols, pectins, and pyrindic alkaloids.
Thanks to its composition, gentian is a bitter tonic with aperitif, digestive, and choleretic properties. It acts on loss of appetite, indigestion, gastric reflux, flatulence, and constipation.
It is renowned for its tonic and fortifying properties. It can be used in cases of fatigue and convalescence with persistent weakness.
It also has leukocytogenic properties (which increases the number of white blood cells) and activity on the assimilation of vitamin B12; it is recommended in cases of vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia. Through its xanthones which have an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) type activity, gentian has anxiolytic properties. It can be recommended in cases of mild depression or anxiety.
They are herbaceous plants, shrubs, or bushes, with generally trifoliate leaves and small, numerous flowers grouped in clusters or panicles. Plants of the genus Desmodium secrete chemicals that repel insects and kill certain seeds. Some species are used in repellent-attraction techniques in agriculture.
