The ginkgo, also known as the maidenhair tree, the thousand maidenhair tree, or the silver apricot tree, is a species of gymnosperm tree and the only extant member of the Ginkgoaceae family.
It is also the only extant species in the Ginkgophyta division.
The ginkgo is a dioecious tree whose male plants bear clusters of pollen cones similar to catkins, and whose female plants have long peduncles bearing a naked ovule (not enclosed in an ovary) at their tip, without petals.
In China, some specimens of this tree are said to have a lifespan exceeding 3,000 years, and more than 100 individuals are said to be over 1,000 years old.
