Lithotamnium, or Phymatolithon calcareum (Pall.) W.H.Adey & D.L.McKibbin, (formerly Lithothamnium calcareum) is a species of red algae in the family Hapalidiaceae and subfamily Melobesioideae, producing calcareous concretions.
It grows mainly in the North Atlantic and is also present in the North Sea, the English Channel, and the Mediterranean. Off the coast of Brittany, lithotamnium is the main constituent of maerl.
Lithotamnium has a highly calcified thallus (45% and 80% carbonates[1]) that is purplish-red, sometimes bright pink, forming several "branches" that can measure up to 7 cm. This forms thin crusts on various substrates (pebbles, rocks, shells, etc.) in its juvenile stage, then the "branches" of the thallus detach to lead an unattached life. Once dead, the lithotamnium takes on a yellowish-white color (due to limestone) and resembles a stone.
